Me and Shade, when Shade was 5.
I woke up 17 years ago and sat at the kitchen table across from my father. He was drinking his coffee and eating toast. My mother had something silly on the TV, like Rosie O’Donnell or something like that.
I started having contractions and called my Dr. They told me to go to the hospital, which was about 45 minutes away. I went back to the kitchen and sat at the table and told my father. I sat there as he finished his coffee and toast. He then went around the room gathering mail.
On the way to the hospital, he stopped at the post office. While there I gave him an Anniversary card to mail to Melissa and Jim. I sat in the car and waited, accidentally set off the car alarm.
When we got to the hospital he took me up to the maternity floor and said, “You have people coming, right?” I did, so then he returned home like they did in the 1950’s.
12 hours or so later … at about 11.51pm a Shade was born.
When I woke up the next morning I was served pancakes by a man singing Easy, by the Commodores.
